Problem Statement

Despite the importance of English language proficiency, many primary 5 students struggle with acquiring and mastering language skills, particularly in grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Traditional teaching methods often do not effectively address the diverse learning needs and interests of primary 5 students, leading to disengagement and limited learning outcomes. This highlights the need for innovative approaches to language instruction that are tailored to the individual needs and interests of students.

 

By leveraging technology and applying theories of personalized learning and cognitive load theory, the “Language Explorers” app aims to address these challenges and provide primary 5 students with a more engaging and effective way to learn English. Personalized learning theory posits that learners have unique learning styles, preferences, and interests, and that instruction should be tailored to meet these individual needs (Bransford et al., 2000). The “Language Explorers” app will use adaptive technology to personalize the learning experience for each student, providing activities and challenges that are relevant to their interests and abilities.

 

In addition to personalized learning, the app will also incorporate principles of cognitive load theory to optimize learning efficiency and effectiveness. Cognitive load theory suggests that learning tasks should be appropriately designed to manage the cognitive load placed on learners’ working memory (Sweller, 1988).
